At FobToronto and MiniFob, we’ve had several customers come into our stores wondering what to do if they find a set of keys on the street. It’s a great question because many people don’t know how to act when they come across lost keys. In today’s blog post, we’re here to address this question and offer some guidance for anyone who finds a set of keys and isn’t sure what steps to take.

What Do You Do if You Find Keys?

If you’ve found a set of keys, here are a few practical steps you can take to try and reunite them with their owner:

Call Your Local Police Department

Contact your local police department and ask them what to do. They may suggest that you turn the set of keys in, which is a good idea. Once you do this, you could also call the places you visited recently and ask them to put up a notice in their lost and found area. You could leave a description of the key ring and the phone number for the police station that has the keys.

Throw the Keys in the Trash

This might seem unconsidered, but tossing the set of keys in the bin ensures they won’t fall into the wrong hands. Once picked up by local council services, the keys will be disposed of in a landfill, making it nearly impossible for anyone with ill intent to retrieve them. However, this method also means the original owner has no way of finding them again.

Do Nothing

Simply leaving the set of keys where you found them allows the owner the opportunity to retrace their steps and recover their lost keys. While this approach doesn’t guarantee they’ll find the keys, it gives them a chance to find them.

Unfortunately, at FobToronto and MiniFob, we cannot accept lost keys. We don’t have the necessary resources to manage or store found keys, and our locations are not equipped to track down their owners. Additionally, we cannot identify a key just by its appearance, and scanning a key fob won’t provide us with information about the owner.

Prevention Is Key: Check Out Our Key Cutting Services

The best way to avoid the stress of losing your keys is prevention. That’s why we recommend always having a backup key. At FobToronto and select MiniFob locations, we offer professional key cutting services to help you get spare keys made before you lose your original set. To find out which MiniFob stores offer key cutting, use our MiniFob Store Locator and choose your city. Each location will list the services it provides—if key cutting is available, you’re all set to have your keys copied quickly and efficiently. However, remember that we can only copy a key if you have a working one—we cannot cut keys from photos. If you’re interested in learning more about why this is, check out our article “Can You Copy a Key From a Picture” to understand why we cannot copy keys from pictures.

Conclusion: What Do You Do if You Find Keys?
In summary, if you find a set of keys, you have a few options: you can hand them in to your local police, dispose of them responsibly, or leave them where they are in case the owner comes back looking. While we don’t accept lost keys at FobToronto or MiniFob, we’re happy to help you with any key cutting needs. Remember, prevention is key—by getting a spare key made, you can avoid the stress of losing your only one.
